Deck hands-on Dylan Marshall speaks with Mike Palumbo and his son, Jared, 5, and Marcus, 9, visiting from Connecticut, who toured Nina and Pinta replicas of ships docked in the fishing village of Punta Gorda’s through Sunday.
Docked in the fishing village of Punta Gorda ‘s, replicas of Christopher Columbus ‘ NiƱa and Pinta is drawing people of all ages who are interested in history or fascinated by the peculiarity of the two ships.
The two most common questions and comments from people who toured the ship is “why are they black?” and “I think they will be greater.”
“Textbook in schools is very misleading, or we are still too young to understand, and those people back then much smaller,” said deck hands-on Dylan Marshall, sailing with the ship for five months. “This is the ship carrying equipment, and crew slept on the deck, all except the captain.
Although small in size, Nina, was built in 1991, is the most authentic in size. Workers using only hand tools build it in Valenca, Brazil. Pinta, built in 2005, is 15 feet long and 8 feet wider than the original, Marshall said.
